How to Get a Strong Chin

A double chin can make you look older and heavier.

Wanting a more defined chin is a common aesthetic goal for both men and women. While some people are genetically gifted with strong chins, others are predisposed to storing fat in that area. This results in an unattractive double chin, which may go away naturally as you lose weight. If you do not carry any excess weight, firming up your chin will involve firming the muscles in your face. Plastic surgery is available as a last resort.

Lose excess fat. You may have a strong chin hiding under a layer of fat. Because you cannot spot train (that is, you cannot pick and choose which areas lose fat), losing weight all over is the best way to get a more defined chin. To safely lose 1-2 pounds a week, cut 250-500 calories from the total number of calories your body burns. To find out how many calories your body burns, use the calculator in the resources section. Adding more exercise to your routine will help you burn fat as well, revealing the chiseled chin you crave.

Use makeup to create a more defined look for your chin. It is possible to contour your chin using a powder 1-2 shades darker than your skin tone and a highlighter 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone. Apply the darker powder along the area you want to recede, usually the double chin area under the jawline. Sweep the highlighter with a brush along your jawline to make it more pronounced. Then, blend with a powder in your correct shade to erase any obvious lines.

Try facial exercises to strengthen the muscles in your face. Slapping your chin 30 times every day may help fight a double chin. These exercises, however, are controversial and results will vary. See the resources section for chin exercises you may want to try if double chins are your problem.

Consider plastic surgery. If, after using these techniques and giving them enough time to take effect, you are dissatisfied with the results, you may want to consult a plastic surgeon. It may be possible to use fillers, chin implants or liposuction to create the look you want. Take your time to research the surgeon, because this is a drastic and permanent step. Always go to a surgeon accredited by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
