Wood snap frames look better.

There are different designs of snap frames. Wooden snap frames are the newest and one step ahead of the simple metal snap frame for different reasons, the least of which is strength, durability and looks. Metal frames are more of an economy frame, and can be flimsy and devoid of character. Both metal and wood frames work in similar fashion, but wood snap frames have more advantages.

Wooden snap frames are the most versatile of all frames. Using only your fingers, change posters or pictures without tools, screws or hardware. The frames will adapt to almost any type of poster or picture thickness and hold it tight. If you happen to get the poster or picture crooked, adjust it using only your fingers. Simply pry open the flaps, insert the poster or picture and let the tension of the flap hold the poster or picture secure.

Looks

Wood looks better than metal. Wood snap frames can show off the natural beauty of oak, mahogany, maple or any other natural hardwood. Most homes use hardwood moldings, cabinets or trim work because natural wood has character. Metal trim looks harsh and cold. Wood frames impart warmth and beauty to any home. Mix and match wood frames to go with the wood in your own home, or buy an exotic teak or Brazilian heartwood frame to show off good taste. Wood snap frames can be as ornate as you want them to be.

Durability

Wood is durable. It's much stronger than flimsy metal frames and is light enough to hang from any type of nail or picture hanging hardware. In addition, if you need to, you can screw other types of hardware to the back of the wooden frame to hang it on rock, cement, block or composition walls. If you do happen to drop or crack your frame, patch it up with some glue and clamps. It won't bend like those thin metal frames. You have more options when hanging wood frames.

Finish

Wood can be stained and finished. Wood snap frames can be purchased in natural, bare wood. Stain them yourself and match them to any wood trim color in your home. Finish them with Danish oil to make the frame perpetually new; at any time in the future, you can add more Danish oil to the frame with a soft cloth to give it that "new" look. For a glassy look that stands out, spray the frame with aerosol lacquer before you install the picture or poster.
