Makeup Tips for Drooping Eyelids

Matte shadows, neutral colors and subtle eyeliner work best for mature eyes.

As people age, the skin loses collagen and elastin, which causes it to deflate and droop. The eye area is especially prone to signs of aging, as the skin around the eyes is thinner and has fewer oil glands. This can make it difficult to figure out a daily makeup regimen that will still highlight one's best attributes without highlighting those signs of aging. However, modern makeup techniques make it easier to doll up even the droopiest eyes.

Eye shadow base is a wonderful product for anyone, but it is essential for more mature women. Spread a thin layer of this creamy product evenly over the lids using the finger or a concealer brush. This will create an even base for applying powder eye shadow. The base helps shadows to stay put all day, reducing fading and creasing. It also keeps shadow from settling into lines and wrinkles.

Avoid Shimmer and Bright Colors

While shimmer and glitter may brighten the eyes, they also tend to exaggerate flaws in the eyelids such as lines, wrinkles and droopiness. Matte eye shadow is more natural looking and is complementary to mature women. Neutral colors, such as browns, beiges and creams, work great for everyone. Color is best when used sparingly and in more subtle shades.

Go Light With Liner

Thick, heavy liner is a thing of the past. It tends to make the eyes look smaller and heavier and also settles into lines and wrinkles (especially when using a liquid). Pencil liner works best, dotted into the base of the lash line using light strokes. Then use a cotton swab or small liner brush to smudge the dots into a line that gets slightly thicker and pulls up at the outer corner for a bit of a lift.

Smudge-Proof Mascara

Mascara is important to avoid a tired and droopy look, as many women tend to lose their eyelashes as they get older and thus lose that wide-eyed look that lashes can create. Use a mascara that is water-resistant (not waterproof -- it's difficult to remove and can make you lose even more of your precious lashes). Also, look for a mascara with a small brush that will grab all the little hairs in the lash line and extend them as much as possible.
