How to Look Good in a Tuxedo

Wear only suits that are 100 percent wool.

You can make any tuxedo look sloppy if you do not wear it and any accessories properly. Tuxedos come with customs and trends that differ from your regular business suits. Some tux fitting and finishing practices work with any type of tuxedo. However, the best way to look good in a tuxedo depends on your accessories and tux style.

A properly fitted tuxedo jacket should taper slightly at the waist, according to Jim's Formal Wear. A jacket too small for your body scrunches inward to form an hourglass shape. An oversize jacket has a boxy appearance. The seams at the shoulder should not fall past the tip of the shoulder. Button only a single button regardless of how many buttons are on your suit. If your tux has a single button, keep it buttoned.

Shirt

Wear a bow tie with a winged-collar shirt; a solid silk necktie looks best on shirts with a collar that lies down on the neck. Most dress shirts use buttons to close the cuff -- called a barrel cuff. French cuff shirts look much classier with a tuxedo and require cuff links. The neck band should have 1/4 inch of space between the band and the neck to avoid chafing. The shirt sleeves should extend about 1/2 inch below the tuxedo sleeves. Movement in any direction should not cause the shirt sleeves to disappear behind the tuxedo sleeves.

Pants

The trouser's waistband should line up with your navel. A well-fitted pair of trousers has the pant leg breaking at the top of the shoe so it slopes downward. Trousers can include stripes and braids. Never cuff the bottom of trousers, folding them upward. Your trousers should have a slimmer fit and higher waist than your regular suit pants, according to male fashion arbiter Tom Julian.

Tips

You can undo the bottom button on a six-button vest because it avoids the vest from scrunching. Cummerbunds and vests should always conceal the waistband of your trousers. Never wear suspenders unless you also have a cummerbund. If you wear a cummerbund, the pleats should point upward. Match the color of your shoes and socks to your tuxedo. For instance, wear black patent leather shoes and black socks with a black tuxedo.
