How Do I Make a Glycolic Peel?

Glycolic acid is derived from fruits such as pineapples.

Glycolic acid is a natural acid derived from sugar cane and numerous fruits. It is common in facial treatments and chemical peels. Glycolic acid peels, when used properly, exfoliate the outer layers of dead skin cells, leaving dry and rough skin feeling smooth. Professional and over-the-counter glycolic peels are often overly concentrated and expensive for general use. Get the benefits of a natural, homemade glycolic peel using fruits and fine cane sugar.

Pick 1 lb. of fruit to use in your glycolic acid peel. Some fruits that contain glycolic acid include pineapples, green grapes, papayas and cantaloupe. Use one or more of these fruits to design your own homemade glycolic peel.

2

Wash the fruit under running water, and wipe dry with a clean kitchen towel. Remove the stem and tough outer skin of fruits such as pineapples and cantaloupe using a sharp knife.

3

Cut the fruits into tiny pieces and remove any seeds. Transfer the fruit into a blender or food processor.

4

Pour 1 c. fine cane sugar and ½ c. clean water for each pound of fruit into the blender. Using cane sugar will help create a mild exfoliating action. Avoid using granulated sugar since this can scratch or damage your skin. Purchase fine cane sugar at a health food or baking supply store.

5

Puree the mixture until it turns into a thick paste. Transfer the glycolic peel mixture into a clean bowl.

6

Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser and wait 30 minutes before applying the glycolic peel. Apply your homemade glycolic peel to your face and neck like a mask.

7

Leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse the glycolic peel off with warm water, and pat dry with a clean towel

8

Transfer any unused glycolic peel mixture into a clean container with lid, and place in the refrigerator for up to five days.

Tips & Warnings

Apply the glycolic peel on a daily basis until you see the desired results.

Skin redness, peeling and a stinging sensation are normal after applying the glycolic peel. These side effects result from the natural glycolic acid's action, which removes dead skin cells to reveal newer skin.

You will notice your skin start to turn brown and peel away. Do not peel off the skin yourself. Let the skin fall off on its own.

Wear a generous amount of sun block one hour before sun exposure.
